Do you have to paint or use contact paper on kitchen cabinets?

Cleaning up an older house. In the kitchen cabinets there were 3 layers of old peeling contact paper... when i peeled it all off, the bare wood is in very good condition. It doesn't appear to be treated. Do i have to paint or line it with contact paper, or can i just leave it bare? Wondering if wet dishes or moisture will harm it, or if it would be ok like it is. thanks.
