Fixing up and painting old kitchen cabinets?
I bought a full set of used kitchen cabinets to put in a new kitchen. They are a bit rough. The fronts and doors are made of solid wood and stained a dark brown color. The sides of the cabinets however are that particle board with a plastic type coating over it that matches that same brown color. We were thinking about painting them white. Since the fronts are wood, those could be sanded down, right? But how do you deal with the sides? Also on the sides, how do you make repairs to that? Can you fill cracks or screw hols with any type of putty and then prime and paint over? Do you have to sand over the sides too with that sticker finish stuff? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would just use a primer for the sides. Putty can be tricky with a plastic coating. Try to work the imperfections into your decor. You can sand and paint the wood with no problem. Be very careful with the sides. Particle board is not forgiving. You could apply a wood veneer on the sides and make it a lot easier on yourself.
Good luck.
