help with kitchen cabinet doors?
I want to add glass to some of my kitchen cabinet doors. Can I use the ones I have and have the middle cut out and then glass added? Or do I have to have them custom made? Also, I want a stainless steel back splash, does that come in sheets or tiles? Thanks for any advice or ideas.

You can get most doors routed out and a glass inserted. Many cabinet doors actually have a center panel that can come out. If it is a solid wood door there is no issue ..get it to a local cabinet maker. I had 4 of mine done for $25.00 + $ 25.00 for a tinted glass with a wire layer to mimic the old style cabinets.
Be careful of the gauge and finish when you look for stainless to use as a back splash. You want something that will withstand scrubbing not something that will scratch or rust when you look at it cross eyed. You can use ceiling tiles that come 24 x 24. Or smaller 6 x 6 if you want. Brushed and shiny. http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/chicago/022008metal_sample_image_30.jpg you can mix the tiles with standard ceramics or mirrors.
Before you choose a stainless back splash get a roll of silver contact paper it’s about $ 20.00 and what is used on lower end appliances. Apply it to the back splash to be sure that’s the look you are going for before spending a small fortune.
Another option for the back splash is to have Plexiglas cut and bolt in on with decorative bolts that you can remove. This gives you a ton of options. You can even cover the inexpensive contact paper with it. If you change the decor simply unbolt the plexi and put something else back there. Wallpaper, hand stenciling, wine labels, photos, artwork.
I ended up putting an expensive pebble tile only behind the stove and sink and did a 3d stencil on the rest with a glaze coat. It held up fine. http://www.stratastones.net/products/Dark-Ocean-Pebble-Tile.html I didn’t grout this flat I left the texture looks great. I had thougt of using the thinset and the stamp mold but figured it would be to awkward.
Your kitchen cabinets doors I would use clear plastic to limit the weight on them to prevent next year problem of warping. Using something like a common Rotozip tool I could cut myself to fit. Its even better with a steel mesh edge dressing around all sides.
The stainless steel back splash does come in sheets but also you can get cut into tile dimensions special order at Home Depot or Lowes.
Sounds great. If you are going with glass cabinet fronts I am afraid that your cabinets won’t work. The good news is you can get the great look with just a few cabinets being glass front with panes / panels to really look expensive and then use flat front doors on all the other cabinets.
New hardware and a good paint job on the existing cabinets exterior sides and fronts is very important. Painting the inside of the glass front cabinets is needed as well for great finished look.
The cabinet fronts can be ordered at lowe’s or home depot with just the measurements you need. New hardware and all cabinets will bring them into one cohesive look.
Back splash – I saw beautiful metal tiles at lowe’s! I was so excited because tiling a back splash is the most cost effective and easiest thing to do. The stainless steel tiles were amazing. http://www.hgtv.com/home-improvement/simple-stainless-steel-backsplash/index.html
