How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets Without Spending a Fortune
Is your kitchen ready for a makeover? Are you short of funds to get the job done? Well, the answer is to paint your kitchen cabinets – simple! If your existing cabinets are not disintegrating and all they need is a coat or two of paint, you could achieve the ‘new kitchen’ look in a matter of days at a very reasonable cost.
The job can’t be done in one day because you need time to prepare the cabinets; prime them and then allow them to dry completely before applying color and/or glaze. So it will all take a few days to allow for the best possible finish.
To begin you need to select your paint, stain or glaze. Go to your local DIY store and pick up some color charts and perhaps a few of those small sample pots of paint. Try a few samples on the cabinets to see how they look. When you have decided what color or finish you are going to use, go and buy all your materials.
You will need enough paint or whatever type of finish you are using to complete the job, primer, brushes and possibly rollers and some paint thinner for cleaning the brushes etc. Buy some of the disposable gloves to save your hands becoming covered in paint.
Once you are happy that you have everything you need, it is time to remove the doors of your cabinets for painting. You will be able to achieve a much better finish by laying them on a flat surface. Remove all the door furniture (knobs, hinges etc) and begin to prepare the surface by washing away any grease or dirt with hot soapy water, dry thoroughly and, if they are wood doors, lightly sand them to remove any loose paint or imperfections.
Prime all the doors by following the manufacturer’s instructions on the can, then leave to dry for at least 24 hours. Whilst the primer is drying, use this time to freshen up the insides of your cabinets. When the doors are ready for your chosen finish, carefully follow any instructions and apply your paint, stain or glaze. You should leave to dry for at least 24 hours, to allow the finish to harden. Finally, replace the knobs and hinges and re hang the doors.
