We used zinsser 123 primer after cleaning & sanding. After 2 coats of primer we started sanding for paint (after 6 days), the primer wouldn't sand smooth & balled up. We took a couple of doors to the local SW store (where our neighbor works) & were told by him and 2 painters that were there that we should have used oil base primer that what we used wasn't sticking well so we needed to remove what was on there now. Is there an easy way to do this? We already have a zillion man hours put in on these cabinets I can't imagine starting over!

Hello All,
We are remodeling our kitchen and I bought some new oak cabinets to replace some rotting ones. We are painted them white. (Sanded, 2 coats of KILZ2 latex primer and 2 coats of "Soft White" Flat latex paint) My question is, can I seal the cabinets with a polyurethane to protect them?
i have heard about the yellowing issue, but they make non-yellowing polyurethane. so that is not an issue

i have made some kitchen cabinet doors. i want to have a glazing on them before i completely finish them.... here is my process and i do plan on using latex paint.

latex water based primer
lightly sand
Paint w/ latex (flat or eggshell?)
use water base poly.
vandyke brown glazing
Then a couple more coats of poly.

does the sheen of the acual paint matter?

My husband and I bought all new unfinished kitchen cabinets. They are oak. I bought a colored stain. Since they are oak, they don't absorb a whole lot of stain, but that's okay. But when it comes to applying the polyurethane, is a foam brush okay our should I stick with a regular brush? Also how many coats of finish should I apply? 2 or 3? I understand that with each coat I need to let it dry 4-6 hours and with the final coat, it says 24 hours. Also, why do we need to sand between each dry coat? If anyone has done this before and has some helpful hints, I would appreciate it!

I have sanded and gotten them back to normal condition, they were painted white. Do i need to raise the wood before I stain? Do I need to applyu a clear coat after I stain? And if so, how many coats?
