Roger can apply the same principles of function and design to any kitchen, regardless of size or budget. The kitchen in this 1950s home is a perfect example. The before-and-after floor plans show where a wall was removed to open the kitchen to the family room. A large peninsula was added for a wonderful cooking and entertaining center, where family and friends congregate. The hood was built to house the vent and decorative lighting, and to create an architectural interest. The original cabinets were replaced by beautiful maple cabinets, loaded with features such as deep, full-extension drawers, drawer buffers, and pull-out cabinets for spices near the cook top. The counter top on the peninsula is granite, and smooth concrete tops the perimeter cabinets. The sink is high quality stainless steel with a built-in drain board. The faucet is a commercial-type industrial sprayer, and a rolling cart is conveniently stowed for serving or an extra prep area. Mirror was used for the backsplash at the beverage center area, which adds wonderful depth and dimension in an unexpected manner. And the utility room doorway is now flanked by two magnetic chalkboards which were framed and hung on a sliding rail.
Kitchen cabinets are available in a variety of colors, materials and finishes, and new hardware can give cabinets a fresh look. Pick out your kitchen cabinets with advice from a certified contractor in this video on home remodeling.
Ok, so I have seen many people use kitchen cabinets for a work station (in their kitchens) with a desk-like area. I am trying to translate that same idea into my office at home (i am starting my own business and need a large workable area and dont have a very large budget). I am just wondering if anyone can give me some pointers on how to do this.
So my local hardware store sells unfinished oak base cabinets for pretty cheep (about each) and that is what I would like to use.
My questions are:
What could I use for the top of the desk..could I just use wood?
If so, what type/thickness should I use?
How do I attach the top to the base cabinets?
Do I attach the top to the wall? (i know you attach the cabinets to the wall)

"Reported by: Erin Calandra Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008 @05:56pm EST CLARION COUNTY - LEEPER, PA - A Leeper based cabinet company is doing their part to be environmental friendly. Kahle's Kitchens is recycling almost all of their waste, but they say they're not going green. They've been green all along. More environmentally friendly than ever before, Kahle's Kitchens recycles the wood waste from wood scraps leftover from building kitchen cabinetry. Your kitchen cabinets start out as a single piece of wood, and there is a lot of waste that occurs when cutting the cabinets. Kahle's Kitchen has 5 tons of wood waste every single day. Instead of sending it to a landfill, they've found a way to recycle it. Kahle's General Manager, Dawn Groft, says from cardboard to scarp wood, and even cleaning rags - everything is reused. They have even taken their wood scraps and turned them into heat. During the summer they turn the wood scraps into bio-bricks used to heat houses in the winter. They say the state of the art equipment is expensive, but it's paid for itself. The cost of disposal is greater than the cost to recycle the materials, saving Kahle's Kitchens money in disposal fees and saving the environment at the same time."
