I was thinking of polyurethane finish. Would this work and what kind? I know there is water and oil based. Will that work with the type of paint I have or should I use something else. I painted my cabinets white. Thanks!
This may seem like a silly question, but I was interested in refinishing my Kitchen Cabinets. I realize that if they are covered in polyurethane, I will have to sand first, and if not, I could just use a refinisher. So I was wondering, how can you tell if a cabinet has been covered in polyurethane?
My kitchen cabinets are from the 70's--clear birch with varnish or polyurethane over. I want to paint over them but would prefer to do it without the mess and hassle of sanding. How effective would liquid sandpaper be in this situation? I have been told I need to sand, primer with an oil-based paint, then paint. Any suggestions?
Hello All,
We are remodeling our kitchen and I bought some new oak cabinets to replace some rotting ones. We are painted them white. (Sanded, 2 coats of KILZ2 latex primer and 2 coats of "Soft White" Flat latex paint) My question is, can I seal the cabinets with a polyurethane to protect them?
i have heard about the yellowing issue, but they make non-yellowing polyurethane. so that is not an issue
My grandfather passed away and I now have to get his house ready to sell. Everything is in pretty good shape other than the kitchen cabinets, which are slightly worn and coated heavily with grease and grime, especially around the range area. They are constructed of birch and have a natural finish. I think they used a light wood stain and sealed them with polyurethane.
If anyone knows an cheap alternative to stripping and re-finishing you would be a Godsend to me!!
I would greatly appreciate any ideas!
I just darkened my cabinets using a gel stain. And I want to finish them off with a good polyurethane coat. But I don't know if I should get a gloss or flat finish? Any recommendations on brand, etc?
We are having cherry cabinets custom made for our kitchen. One cabinet maker uses laquer and the other uses polyurethane. We want a beautiful finish that is long lasting and durable. We're hearing conflicting information. What would work best for Kitchen cabinets that get a lot of use?
What is the best finish for Kitchen cabinets for appearance and durability – Laquer or Polyurethane?
Having new custom cherry cabinets made for our kitchen remodel. One cabinet maker uses laquer finish, another uses polyurethane. We're getting conflicting reports on which one is most beautiful and durable in a very busy kitchen. Which is best?
My husband and I bought all new unfinished kitchen cabinets. They are oak. I bought a colored stain. Since they are oak, they don't absorb a whole lot of stain, but that's okay. But when it comes to applying the polyurethane, is a foam brush okay our should I stick with a regular brush? Also how many coats of finish should I apply? 2 or 3? I understand that with each coat I need to let it dry 4-6 hours and with the final coat, it says 24 hours. Also, why do we need to sand between each dry coat? If anyone has done this before and has some helpful hints, I would appreciate it!
