what grit sandpaper should i use to sand down kitchen cabinets before i paint them?

   If there are any deep scratches or blemishes, use a coarse (100 or lower) paper to smooth the surface, then go back to a fine (200 or higher) to create a nice smooth surface to paint. The higher the number the finer the finish. If it is a large job, you might want to invest in a hand held rotary sander. Use a pine tar treated rag to pick up any left over grit and clean with mineral spirits or other fast drying liquid. Then your ready to paint.

   If there is any finish on the cabinets now (paint or stain) you will need to remove it. Paint removers are messy and will burn your skin so wear gloves, ventilate, and use eye protection.
