What kind of paint does one use when refinishing kitchen cabinets? (They are solid wood)?
Their original color when installed was an off whiteish color...not stained.
Oh, and, they are coated in nicotine...the previous owners were junkies.

If you really want to actually cover-up a stain,Use a great product that can be found at any major home improvement store. It’s called "cabinet rescue" ( @ $15.00). It will go on any surface and dry to a slick smooth surface. You can leave it like that or paint over it.My customers swear by it.
Sheen will give you the look you desire (flat, semi, eggshell, etc). What you are asking I think is the type. Stay away from latex on cabinets and use a good oil based paint. The finish will be more durable and lasting. Available at any Duron, Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, etc…
You can use a DeGlosser on the Varnish, then use an Oil base primer- then 3 coats of Paint , spray is preferable.
simple use melamine paint it is hard and durable it is what is recommend for cupboards..
I have usually used floor/porch paint.
It’s a little more expensive, but taking things in/out of the cabinets will wear the finish off. The floor paint is much more durable and waterproof.
If the cabinets are stained, you might want to do a light sanding or use a bonding agent before painting.
1. Prep them -sand
2. If they are previosly painted and nicotine stained you will need to prime them with a stain blocking primer. other wise the nicotine stains may come thru the paint.
3. 1 to 2 coat of finis paint. A semi gloss alkyd paint will be more durable then a latex. If you can mask everything off and spray them with an conventional type spray gun you will get the best finish, other wise you will see the brush marks some what .
First you have to sand them down to get any remaining varnish off of them – even if it looks like it may be mostly gone. TRUST me–SAND THEM!! Then you will need a primer, followed by a few coats of paint. I opted for semi-gloss, because it’s easier to clean, but you can also use satin if you want less sheen.
Good luck!
I REALLY despise painting wood cabinets! Are you sure you wouldn’t get just as good a look on them by re-staining them? Stains come in a whole rainbow of colors that would still allow the grain of the wood to show through. You would need to sand all the old varnish off first. Once cupboards are stained, you can seal them using a varathane product. It doesn’t discolor over time like a varnish.
