What paint do I use to paint kitchen cabinets black, but not shiny black?
I want to paint my kitchen cabinets black (they are ugly 70s dark stain), but I do not want shiny black. I have looked at milk paint, but I am concerned that it will not work well because of the existing finish. I know most painters recommend oil-based enamel because it cleans easily, but that is not the finish I am looking for. Any suggestions for painting the cabinets and obtaining a matte finish that will still hold up to the wear and tear of a kitchen?
Thanks

use a flat interior paint if you want to be matte finish, but it will not be as easy to clean as a semi-gloss or eggshell finish. Flat is easier to touch-up though, if the doors start to look too dirty later.
You can use milk paint. Add Extra-Bond (a nontoxic polymer emulsion)into the first coat of milk paint. Make sure the existing surface is clean and roughed up with sandpaper to remove any gloss, before painting. Milk paint is very flat so will absorb dirt if it is not sealed. You can use any clear sealer over the paint, and it will take on the sheen of whatever you put on top of it. Stick with a matte topcoat and you should be able to clean it easily and still keep the look of the milk paint.
